PSD's leader, Marcel Ciolacu, has reiterated on Saturday at the PSD Covasna election conference that the Szekler Land will never have autonomy, emphasizing that Romanians have never fought against the Szeklers in their history. "Never, I repeat, the Szekler Land will never have autonomy! I'll explain why. First of all, when they had autonomy, we, Romanians, did not give it to them. Furthermore, we did not take it away from them. I'm trying to understand, and I think it is our duty, as politicians and as Romanians, regardless of ethnicity, to understand where we go wrong, why we fight among ourselves, especially since in our history, we have never fought against the Szeklers, and they have never fought against us", said Ciolacu.
If any injustice has been done to them, it was done by the Saxons and the Hungarians. "I know that we fought together under Mihai Viteazul's flag. Maybe we should explain our history more to our children, before throwing stones at each other", Ciolacu added. The PSD leader also stated that he does not understand why Szekler children do not learn Romanian and thus limit their professional opportunities. "I don't understand why Szekler children don't learn Romanian. I don't understand, you know... In the times we live in, you can't force anyone, we live in a free Europe, we wanted this very much, to be part of the European Union, of NATO... I don't understand why they cut their own wings. I don't understand why they don't try to develop professionally throughout Romania and, gradually, through this attitude, they will either be forced to remain prisoners of their birthplace, or to leave for Hungary. These are painful things, things we cannot change, as we can never change history, but together, through dialogue, we can build a better future, a future based first and foremost on respect, not hate", Marcel Ciolacu said.
